Archival pen on 425gsm Saunders Waterford paper
A4 Portrait — 21 × 29.7cm / 8.27 × 11.69 inches
Small Limited Edition of 8
Created as a continuation of the Drift Construction series, this A4 study explores how repeated lines can suggest both movement and form. Inspired by photographs of the hand-made templates seen in Bridget Riley's studio, the work developed through the use of small sections of card cut into curves and used as guides to establish an evolving visual system.
In this study, the guides gradually expand and contract, allowing the flowing structure of the lines to describe an almost three-dimensional presence across the surface. Built line by line using archival pens, subtle shifts in colour create areas of transition and optical blending, where individual marks merge into luminous gradients of hue.
Serving as both an experiment and a construction drawing, the study extends the processes established in earlier works while investigating how rhythm, colour and curvature can transform a flat surface into an illusion of depth and movement.
