Archival pen on 425gsm Saunders Waterford paper
A3 Portrait — 29.7 × 42 cm / 11.7 × 16.5 inches
Original artwork — one of one
Created on the first day of my son’s GCSE exams, Everything Starts to Flow reflects the emotional shift that happens once anticipation gives way to experience. After months of preparation and nervous build-up, the beginning arrived with a mixture of excitement, uncertainty, confusion, and routine. A few exams in, a few days passed, and what once felt overwhelming slowly began to find its rhythm.
Constructed through countless hand-drawn lines using archival pen on paper, the piece moves in layered waves of colour that rise, bend, and drift across the surface. The flowing structure mirrors thoughts in motion — nerves, encouragement, conversations, expectations, and moments of calm all existing together. While energetic and restless in places, the work ultimately carries a sense of optimism: the feeling of continuing forward despite uncertainty, trusting that momentum and experience gradually begin to steady the path ahead.
The repetitive process of drawing each line became reflective and meditative, allowing the work to build slowly through rhythm and accumulation. As with the larger A2 works, subtle shifts in colour and spacing create movement and atmosphere, balancing structure with emotional fluidity.
