No Reason to Be Afraid
Medium: Archival pen on Saunders Waterford Traditional White – 425gsm
Size: 297 × 297 mm (11.7 × 11.7 in)
Each drawing finished as a unique piece
Inspired by a fleeting moment while grocery shopping — a long trail of blue towel caught in the wind, twisting and dancing with effortless grace. The scene brought to mind the plastic bag scene from American Beauty, where Ricky Fitts reflects:
“Do you want to see the most beautiful thing I ever filmed? It was one of those days when it's a minute away from snowing. And there's this electricity in the air, you can almost hear it, right? And this bag was just... dancing with me... like a little kid begging me to play with it. For fifteen minutes. That's the day I realized that there was this entire life behind things, and this incredibly benevolent force that wanted me to know there was no reason to be afraid. Ever... Sometimes there's so much beauty in the world... I feel like I can't take it... and my heart is just going to cave in.”
This artwork captures that same sense of quiet wonder — beauty revealed in the ordinary, movement as meditation, stillness within motion. The flowing lines echo the rhythm of air and chance, transforming a simple observation into a moment of reflection on fragility, connection, and the gentle reminder that there is no reason to be afraid.
