A field of flowing lines pulses with movement—each strand distinct, yet inseparable from the whole. Colours bend and weave like memory itself, echoing the rhythm of a journey shaped not just by place, but by people. Swizzle Cycle draws from time spent in Bermuda, where stories unfolded as easily as conversation, and strangers became something closer to kin.
Inspired by the tradition of the Bermuda Rum Swizzle—often called the island’s national drink—this piece reflects more than the cocktail itself; it speaks to the act of gathering. Historically mixed in large vessels and shared among friends, the swizzle is less about precision and more about participation. Recipes vary from family to family, often including dark and light rum, citrus juices, sugar, and bitters, stirred with a “swizzle stick” cut from a local tree. It’s a drink shaped by contribution, improvisation, and community.
One story, passed along like the drink itself, told of a group ritual—ingredients brought individually, poured together, and mixed in the most unexpected of vessels: a washing machine. A playful, almost mythical act of collective creation. Once complete, the mixture would be shared out again, each person taking a part of the whole. Whether literal or embellished, the story carries a truth: when people come together, offering what they have, something richer emerges.
The lines in this piece behave in much the same way. Each colour follows its own path, yet is guided and influenced by those around it. There is no hierarchy—only flow, exchange, and subtle tension. Moments of convergence and divergence mirror the way conversations unfold, how friendships form, and how shared experiences ripple outward.
At its core, Swizzle Cycle is about connection—the beauty of collective energy, and how contributing to something larger than ourselves creates something more vibrant, more complex, and more alive.
