The Light Beyond the Break - A3 - Pen Original - 2026

£400.00

Archival pen on 425gsm Saunders Waterford paper
A3 Portrait — 29.7 × 42 cm / 11.7 × 16.5 inches
Original artwork — one of one

Inspired by the final moments of daylight disappearing beyond the horizon, The Light Beyond the Break reflects the quiet experience of sitting in the line-up at a surf break as sunset fades into evening. The flowing bands of colour move like shifting currents, echoing both the rhythm of the ocean and the changing tones of the sky as light dissolves into darkness.

The work was also shaped by hearing someone speak about “leading to the light” — a phrase that stayed in the mind and gradually merged with memories of watching the horizon at the end of the day. Layers of vivid lines bend and drift across the surface, creating a sense of movement and atmosphere, like reflections stretching across water just before nightfall.

The title references both the surf break itself and the idea of something just beyond reach — the final traces of light lingering after the sun has disappeared from view.
