Archival pen on 425gsm Saunders Waterford paper
A2 Landscape — 59.4 × 42 cm / 23.4 × 16.5 inches
Original artwork — one of one
Into the Light is drawn from memories of early mornings in Corfu, waking before sunrise and slipping away to the sea while the island is still quiet.
At that hour, the Mediterranean can appear almost black. The water is deep and dark before the first light reaches it, and then, as the sun begins to rise, a brilliant trail of yellow stretches across the surface towards you.
This piece holds a memory of swimming out into that light with my wife. Of leaving the children sleeping with their grandparents, heading down to the water together in the early hours, and watching the darkness slowly give way to colour. Taking photographs as though she were holding the rising sun in her hands, or swimming directly into the path it had made across the sea.
The thousands of flowing lines move between those two sensations: the darkness of the water before dawn and the warmth that gradually pours across it. The yellow becomes a path through the drawing—a fleeting moment of sunlight, movement and reflection.
A memory of Corfu, of the Mediterranean before the rest of the day begins, and of swimming together towards the morning.
